Dr Estella Carpi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction at University College London (UCL), specialized in Humanitarian Studies. She is also an adjunct lecturer in Humanitarian Affairs in the Alta Scuola di Economia e Relazioni Internazionali (ASERI) at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan (Italy). With a PhD in Anthropology of Humanitarianism from the University of Sydney in Australia (2015), most of her academic work revolved around identity politics in humanitarian aid provision in conflict-affected areas, and the relational economy of humanitarianism. Her interdisciplinary background combines social anthropology, social psychology, humanitarian and development studies. Her research informs her teaching and consultancy work.
Estella’s career as a qualitative researcher took off in 2008, working for the Egypt-branched UN Development Program (UNDP) and, from 2009 to 2010 for the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in Cairo, where she focused on vulnerability and social welfare in Arab countries. In 2015 and 2016, she also worked with the New York University of Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), and Trends Research and Advisory as a Senior Fellow (UAE). From 2016 to 2017, with UN Habitat-Beirut and Lebanon Support.
Estella has been a visiting researcher at the American University of Beirut (AUB) during 2011; Migration Research Center at Koç University (MiReKoc) in Istanbul (Türkiye) in 2021; and in the Institute for Migration Studies at the Lebanese American University (LAU) during 2024 and 2025.
Academic Profile

Estella’s career as an educator started quite early after receiving her MPhil Degree in Linguistic Anthropology (2008). Estella used to teach Italian to foreign immigrants in Milan (Italy), and held seminars on the Arabic language in the Program of Lingusitic and Cultural Mediation at the University of Milan (Italy). During her PhD (2010-2014), Estella worked as a teaching assistant in several topics in the Social and Political Sciences at the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales, and at the Koori Centre for teaching support to Aborigenal students (Australia). She also held Lecturer positions in Conflict Studies and Humanitarian Affairs at the University of Turin (2018), University of Pisa (2017-18) and, until the present, at the ASERI – Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan (Italy).
As an educator, Estella also chose to train herself in neurodiversity. She owns a Professional Diploma in Developmental Psychology from the University of California-Berkeley (2023), and received a training certificate in dyslexia from the University of San Diego (2021), and in autism from the University of North Carolina (2022).

Safeguarding Consultancies

Expert advice on safeguarding policies and practices for humanitarian and development settings. She has provided consultancies and trainings in Safeguarding since 2021, mostly working with Syrian NGOs as well as INGOs in Mozambique and Austria. She is also an editor of Safeguarding e-learning materials for NGOs in Arabic and Brazilian Portuguese.

Estella can offer translation services for non-specialistic documentation across Italian, English, Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese; she can also provide interpreting and mediation services across English, Arabic, and Italian.
Language Classes and Tailored Tutoring for All School Levels

English, Arabic, and Italian language classes tailored to all school levels for non-native speakers. One-to-one or group-focused tutoring support offered on all subjects related to the Social and Political Sciences, tailored to any school level (primary, secondary, undergraduate, and postgraduate level).
